Home Repair Grants

HAPI assists families in Northeastern and North Central South Dakota Counties in the rehabilitation of their home.

Applicants will be provided a list of acceptable and unacceptable home improvement expenses you will review with HAPI, sign and agree to repairs prior to accepting the grant.  The 2025 Home Rehab Grants Application  is available as well as the 2025 Home Rehab Grant Application for 62 and older.  Both of which will be available for download until January 15th, 2025.  Prior to the disbursal of funds, you must attend HAPI's Homebuyers Education.  These classes are available to you at no cost by HAPI.   Limited funding may be in the form of a forgivable mortgage that goes along with receiving this grant.  It states the grant will be forgiven at the rate of 20% per year.  If you move or sell the home prior to the 5 years, you will be required to pay the unforgiven portion of the balance. 

Terms and Conditions:

• The home must be owner occupied
• Mobile homes do not qualify
• Owners must be below 80% of the median income.  Limits vary by household size and county.
• All work must be performed by a licensed and insured contractor
• All materials must be purchased and installed by the contractor
• Grant funds cannot be used by a tenant or landlord for a rental unit
• All applicants must complete HAPI Home Buyer Education
• Pre-Inspection and Post-Inspection will be performed by a HAPI inspector
• If you have previously received a Rehabilitation Grant from HAPI, please be advised that you are NOT eligible to apply again..

• Roof Repairs/Shingles
• Siding
• Windows/Doors
• Plumbing
• Electrical
• Foundation Repairs
• Accessibility Issues
